Nasal plasty involves the framework of the nose (the bone and cartilage)
being altered in shape and size. Various results are possible: A large
nose can be made smaller, a small nose enlarged, a hook
or warped nose straightened, a wide nose made thinner, a long nose
shortened, or a hanging tip removed or elevated. Surgery can also
result in easier breathing.
It is usually undertaken using local anaesthetic together with
the necessary sedation. After surgery, a plaster bandage stabilises
the nasal bone and counteracts swelling. None-the-less some swelling
and bruising does occur around the eyes, which has normally disappeared
by the time the plaster is removed after 5 to 10 days.
